CFCs have been widely used as a ‘blowing agent’ in extrusion foaming, turning the liquid plastic into a foam which, when set, is light but relatively strong, thanks to its internal cellular structure. The result? Lighter products made with less plastic and with high insulation properties.

This is an ideal solution in sectors such as construction where Extruded Foam Polymers is a common solution to enhance thermal performance. Ideal that is, if it wasn’t for the use of CFCs. The industry needed to find an alternative and turned to Hydrocarbons (HCs) as a replacement. But now there are greener options.

Cost effective

Carbon Dioxide (CO2) is a versatile resource in plastic parts manufacture and has become an effective blowing agent, particularly if you need low densities and a high level of homogeneity. Also, unlike hydrocarbons, CO2 is not flammable and is significantly cost effective. 

Plus, importantly, it has the lowest global warming potential (GWP) of all the agents. Even so, at BOC we ensure that all the CO2 we use has been recovered from production residues and by-products, thereby stopping it from entering the atmosphere in the first place.
